Jean-François ZEVACO (1916-2003)
Jean-François ZEVACO, French architect, born in Casablanca (Morocco) in 1916, he graduated from the École des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1945, where he was taught under the architects Emmanuel Pontrémoli and Eugène Beaudouin in Marseille.
In 1947, he moved to Casablanca to begin his career. In 1960, he joined the team of the reconstruction of Agadir. He is a founding member of the Moroccan branch of CIAM - The GAMMA (Groupe des Architectes Modernes Marocains). He received the Aga Khan Award for the Agadir courtyard houses in 1980.
The critic Michel Ragon quotes him in his book “Histoire de l’architecture et de l’urbanisme moderne” and prefaces his monographic work in 1999. Jean-François Zevaco, who died in 2003 in Casablanca, built mainly in Morocco, but also in Tchad and Sudan, and leaves behind some 165 buildings.
