Elie AZAGURY (1918-2009)

Elie AZAGURY, born in Casablanca in 1918 and died in Casablanca on 22 January 2009. Trained at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1937 to 1946, he worked in numerous studios (Beaudouin, Perret) as well as two years in Stockholm with the English architect Ralph Erskine (1914-2005).

Upon his return to Casablanca in 1949, he built several villas with a modern and inventive functionalism, such as the Villa Schulmann (1951), while his own house (1962) is a manifesto of Neo-Brutalism.

He is a member of GAMMA and the first president of the Moroccan Union of Architects after independence (1958-1971). He designed different scales of projects like the new housing development of Derb Jdid, Cabo Negro touristic village, the administrative courthouse of Agadir, and many private houses.

Azagury’s architecture was constantly presented as faithful to the ethics of the Modern Mouvement and built in respect to the Moroccan environment.
